Кроме всем известного Болливуда — киноиндустрии, базирующающейся в Бомбее (Северная Индия, фильмы на языке хинди) в Индии есть еще несколько киноиндустрий южных штатов Индии (южноиндийское кино), которое, конечно, пока не так известно в мире и в России (но завоевывает все большую популярность). Южноиндийское кино чаще всего уступает фильмам на хинди по величине бюджета, но обладает другими достоинствами, по сравнению с болливудскими фильмами (многие уже имели возможность убедиться в этом).
Среди Южноиндийских индустрий выделяются:
Колливуд — киноиндустрия, базирующаяся в городе Ченнаи (Мадрас), штат Тамил-Наду (фильмы на языке тамили);
Толливуд — киноиндустрия на языке телугу, базируется в штате Андхра-Прадеш; (иногда, правда Толливуд также может обозначать бенгальскую киноиндустрию в Толигунге);
Молливуд — киноиндустрия на языке малаялам (не путать с мормонской киноиндустрией в штате Юта, США, которую тоже иногда называют Молливудом).

Немые фильмы снимались в Колливуде с 1916 года, а первое звуковое кино появилось в 1931.
